Guild Wars 2 : Gameplay from G-Star 2011

Several videos from yesterday’s Guild Wars 2 booth over at G-Star 2011. What’s in the videos?
Well, there’s PvP, underwater combat, questing, general gameplay and more.

Enjoy watching!

Rumors have it that Cpt. BetaCake was once a mere mortal. In human years he would be 28 years old. Nowadays, he finds peace in sharing gaming news and leaks.

videos 3 and 4 were very good as far as player skill and speed at which he unlocked skills. loved the circle strafing to keep the mob within reach of his exploding magma balls and in the second video he started to get really pro with the water skills, it was fun to watch.
in video 5 it’s good to see that they made the video more visceral and they added more layers to the fight which was great to watch. the Shatterer is still my favorite boss DE fight that we have seen so far. it’s really hard to believe that this game is still in closed alpha, GG ANet. thanks for the upload.

So… its always, hit the boss, run from aoe, kill adds, rinse and repeat… the pvp better be the most amazing thing ever, right after pizza and beer i mean.

So… It’s not always; Talk to guy with ? above his head, kill twenty non-threatening docile mob’s in field/mine/whatever (because the guy said they were violent, even though they show no signs of being so…), return to guy to get reward, rinse and repeat, because that sounds awesome.

Thats the problem, non of the 2 options sound good at all. If they are focusing on big bosses at least make the fights radically different from each other. The fact that i still have not seen a single big boss actually move from were they stand is “weird”, won’t say disappointing since i would need to have expectations to be disappointed. They simply stay there, fly/hover up and come down… with that much open space… really?

first, you are being insincere when you refer to the boss fights as hit boss, run from aoe and kill adds like it lacks depth or more importantly a sense of fun and accomplishment. these are large boss fights with many layers including multiple types of add management from stationery adds, to mobile adds, to dismantling and erecting structures and weapons, then there is finding a way to weaken the boss ala Asura Mega Laser and killing portals, etc. and i think it is because of these layered fight mechanics, like turrets, the really big boss battles are stationary for the most part with mainly vertical movements.

there are however VERY mobile smaller boss mobs like http://youtu.be/yFfgpmUYooI?t=11m3s
ANet though, is always improving the game by great leaps and bounds as can be seen at the G-Star convention all npcs mobs now weapons swap AND dodge your attacks and well as ranged mobs using kiting tactics to kill you as can be see in this video http://youtu.be/IAD5HDpHqbc?t=3m40s so who knows what we will have by the time the game going into beta this year and then by the time the game is released. i for one i looking forward to it.

That’s the problem though. Even with all the layers you’re suggesting the boss fights still come across as incredibly dull. I mean, a wing buffet or a mass stun roar or something would be nice instead of just chipping away at his health, running from the telegraphed AoE, and killing tons of add management.

This is a giant dragon we’re talking about. Have the thing fly up into the air as he casts a tremendous lightning storm, where you have to hide under his body or die. Have him spin rapidly and tailwhip anyone within a melee radius every now and again to make things more frantic.

I mean, here I am watching video 5 and the warrior chick looked like she was absently running around 60% of the time, trying to figure out what she’s supposed to do.

And while I’ll admit that the smaller bosses you linked are far more elaborate, it’s a little bit disconcerting that the boss they keep showcasing as the “bamf dragon” is so run of the mill.

I think we have to remember that this is an open world encounter, it’s part of a dynamic event — Guild Wars 2′s quests. It is not an instanced dungeon boss.
Yes, it would be great if the dragon flew about or charged or whatever (and the games still in alpha so who’s to say such a thing won’t be implemented), but if you compare this to, let’s take a random modern MMO, say SW:TOR’s static quests, this run of the mill dragon looks astounding.

why are you acting like an outdoor raid encounter this layered and that scales is not impressive? i mean you even go so far as to call it dull. idk man, it’s fine not to like it, but dislike it for what it is, not what you imagine it to be. the boss does aoe fear that also does pulsing damage, calls Bloated Creepers, undead minions, erects bone walls, does some melee, has bone fingers that fling npcs/players back to the boss and you say the boss fight is dull? for an open world encounter at that? if you can direct me to outdoor world bosses on this scale with better mechanics for an MMO i would gladly love to see it.

the one major factor you forget, ANet are heavy on iteration (just look at the cutscene and character customization they have greatly improved on in just 3 months) so with the game only still in Closed Alpha things could always change for the better. but to act like their efforts do not already, in their current state, go far and beyond any other a MMO out or coming out is a little insincere.

Sounds like someone is looking at cake and lamenting because it’s not pie, when no other MMO on the market that I can think of has created either cake OR pie.

People WANT to find something wrong with the game, that’s the way it is going to be forever. If this is dull, then any other MMO’s boss and world fights should be considered anesthetics.
