Jake Song was interviewed during G-Star 2011 by some Korean journalists, answering crucial questions about ArcheAge and the way XLGAMES has planned to deal with CBT4 , Open Beta and also the release of the game in Korea.

The interview is roughly translated into English, so while its not an 100% accurate translation, it still gets the point across. Enjoy!

G-Star 2011 Interview with Jake Song

Q: What new content are testers going to experience during the upcoming CBT4 of ArcheAge?

A: The main focus of CBT4 will be the new continent, which is where the Hariharan race lives. Players will have to construct boats in order to get there. Other than that we’re worked hard on fixing all the bugs found in previous CB tests.

Q: Is the new territorial warfare taking place on the Hariharan continent what players call “castle sieges”?

A: Players who will arrive at the new continent, will be eligible to occupy certain points or areas of it, where we’re giving them the opportunity to build their own castles. There, guilds with castles will be able to wage war at eachother.

We should, however, point out that this feature will not be available during the start of Closed Beta 4 but at a later date. There is also a possibility the castle siege system will not be released at all in Closed Beta 4.

Q: Have you made any plans for client patches during the 80 days of CBT4?

A: Yes, we have made a commitment to update at least once per week. This is a promise we’re giving to our testers and have no intention of letting them down on it.

Q: Is there a level cap in place for CBT4?

A: We’re not sure as of yet, the development team is still deciding on it. We’re thinking of capping it at level 25, however that decision is not final yet.

Q: You said players will have to build boats in order to reach the new continent. Why is that? Can’t they just swim across?

A: Of course. Players will also be able to swim there, but its not something we would advise them to do. Building a boat and sailing will be much faster and also a lot safer. There are lots of sea monsters lurking in the sea.

Q: In one of the recent ArcheAge trailers we saw players on a boat engaging a sea monster. Was that scripted for the trailer or are players going to be able to hunt down sea monsters?

A: We believe that players might get bored floating aimlessly in the middle of the sea, so we’ve added some boss-level monsters to roam the waters. These monsters will drop items as well.

Q: We would like to know more about the new race, Hariharan.

A: All we can say for now is that Hariharan is a human race with a slightly cute design and influenced by the Eastern cultures.

Q: We were shocked that CBT4 is going to last 80 days. Does that mean Open Beta was pushed back in schedule?

A: We are working very hard and trying to get into the Open Beta phase as soon as possible. Once we feel that the content is ready, we will roll out the Open Beta phase.

Q: How many players will be let into CBT4?

A: We have made plans to invite 5000 players on Dec 7th. However, we will be monitoring the whole process and might invite more later on if it is required.

Q: Some players are still not impressed by the character design. Why do you think that happens?

A: We are listening to players and taking their opinions to alter the class designs. Furthermore, players can look forward to a better customization feature when creating their characters. I must stress that we will not be going down the “sexy” design way for our characters, we just want to make them more beautiful and accepted by the gamers.

Q: What would you advise testers to check out in CBT4?

A: There is no specific content which players must take note of. We want players to engage in all the features found, not just concentrating on killing mobs and gaining levels. They should make good use of their time to experience the world.

Q: In the last beta phase, there were negative comments about the user interface (UI). Has this issue been addressed?

A: Yes, we have updated and optimized the user interface and its one of the features players will get to try it in CBT4.

Q: Has the housing system been altered? In the previous beta phase, players were building their houses right beside some important in-game buildings.

A: We also pondered on this issue for some time. We are still at odds over whether to limit the number of houses built or increasing the maintenance fee, which will be concluded in the near future.

Q: Will ArcheAge be entering the Open Beta phase after CBT4?

A: This depends entirely on the results from CBT4. There might be another CBT after it, but it is also possible that ArcheAge will enter Open Beta when CBT4 is concluded.

Rumors have it that Cpt. BetaCake was once a mere mortal. In human years he would be 28 years old. Nowadays, he finds peace in sharing gaming news and leaks.

…It scares me that for a big as tremendously huge as ArcheAge looks they’re only inviting 5,000 people to try and do all the stuff the game seems to offer.

Hopefully they hunker down and test the hell out of the features for those 80 days.
