Diablo III : It won’t have PvP on release!?

You know something’s wrong when bad news come from Blizzard. First the 600 lay-offs a while back, now the announcement of Diablo III releasing without PvP. Are you shocked? Because I am.

Apparently implementing the auction house and microtransactions systems comes before the implementation of PvP for Blizzard. You can read the full announcement they made below :

“As we’re counting down the days until we’re ready to announce a release date for Diablo III, we’ve come to realize that the PvP game and systems aren’t yet living up to our standards. Today, we wanted to let you know that we’ve made the difficult decision to hold back the PvP Arena system and release it in a patch following the game’s launch. After a lot of consideration and discussion, we ultimately felt that delaying the whole game purely for PvP would just be punishing to everyone who’s waiting to enjoy the campaign and core solo/co-op content, all of which is just about complete.

While we work on making sure PvP lives up to its full potential, we hope you’ll find some consolation in the fact that soon, you’ll be having a blast leveling characters, finding items, learning the classes, and perfecting builds…and that when the Arenas do arrive, you’ll be all the better prepared for battle.

When the PvP patch is ultimately ready, it will add multiple Arena maps with themed locations and layouts, PvP-centric achievements, and a matchmaking system that will help you and your team get into fairly matched games quickly and easily. We’ll also be adding a personal progression system that will reward you for successfully bashing in the other team’s skulls.

We know a lot of you are looking forward to PvP, and we’ll be focusing our post-launch efforts on making sure the Arenas are as brutal, bloody, fast-paced, and awesome as we know they can be. In the meantime, we’re in the process of putting the finishing touches on what we think is a truly epic campaign and co-op experience for launch.

We’ll have a lot more info to share on the PvP system in the future, and we look forward to the moment we can get the game into your hands.”

Rumors have it that Cpt. BetaCake was once a mere mortal. In human years he would be 28 years old. Nowadays, he finds peace in sharing gaming news and leaks.

I sincerely hope that millions of diablo fans are not going to buy that game. at least, i am not. hopefully blizzard realizes, that their fucking microtransaction system totally destroys the gameplay.. Just imagine diablo 2 with that system in place! no soj’s, no real trade, instant win for rich bastards… no pvp at release is just the cherry on the cake lol.

    • Coffex

I’ve never understood the hate for this feature. You are being given more choice, not less.

No-one is being forced to sell their items for real money.

  • MrGrimord

Pvp as a DLC ? It would be a joke. But at this point, it doesnt matter for me.

  • Chad Caughmann

They’ve waited nearly 12 years since Diablo 2 to release this game…what’s a little more going to matter? This isn’t typical Blizzard fashion at all.

Very good point too, Betacake, about prioritizing the Microtransactions and Auction House before PVP, yet Blizzard comments – “we ultimately felt that delaying the whole game purely for PvP would just be punishing to everyone who’s waiting to enjoy the campaign and core solo/co-op content”

Had they been working on PVP at that time instead of the AH and MT, would they be comfortable releasing early without the AH and MT? I know a LOT of gamers would be comfortable without those features :) (The AH is ok….MT can go to hell)

    • Scottishpride

You are not too bright. Yes, let blizzard work on PvP(which a small number will play) rather than the AH(which many people will use).

I foresee you running Blizzard as a one-man crew in a short amount of time as you seem to know so much more than all of them combined.

I’m surprised you are posting here and you aren’t on your yacht coming up with your next million dollar idea.

      • Chad Caughmann

Well, in case you didn’t notice…I did say the AH was fine…but I guess you glazed over that. My overall opinion was more-so related to the MT.

Other than that…good job writing a negative post directed at a community member…way to be an ass :)

  • Killuminati

yah, def getting GW2 instead of this.

    • MrGrimord

Absolutly, Blizzard killed their own franchise with so many bad decisons. Even if I’m not a pvper, the pvp in GW2 seems much more fun and entertaining than some crap arena a la WoW with microtransactions that affect gameplay. This game won’t reward effort anymore.

      • Toggy_

lets see what the sales look like before saying they killed their own franchise :)

    • Fonds

GW2 is an MMO… this is a hack ‘n slash game.

I don’t understand how you can even begin comparing the two.

      • MrGrimord

        They are both RPG…

        • Hobs

          Diablo an rpg… i lol´d

          • brainfriendly

you have classes (roles) and you’re playing a game. There’s also a buttload of story and apparently no pvp at launch. How does this not constitute and rpg?

      • Killuminati

I choose a class, design my toon, go kill shit to get experience, gear, and loot in order to become more powerful so I can get more gear and more loot. You’re right, how could I ever compare one video game to another?…

  • Apollo

How about they just finish that game. Understand the hype is huge but why ruin their chances at a huge releases by taking a bunch of shit out. It is gonna be like starcraft all over again.

  • Johnny Propane

I’m probably in the very small minority, but, this news doesn’t bother me.

I’ve always viewed (and played) the Diablo games as strictly single player games.

Only later on did I venture onto Battle.net and play co-op.

I love PvP in my MMOs, but Diablo PvP is something I never participated in; just never interested me.

    *shrugs*

    • Gobang

I’d say you are in the majority. The vocal minority are the ones ranting about how Blizz is giving them the shaft, when in reality, they can just wait to purchase the game since the same scenario would have happened if they delayed it. Most will buy it anyway.

Diablo 3 is going to sell gangbusters either way you slice it.

I have a lot of respect for BetaCake, but this story was written with an obvious slant, claiming they decided on unfavorable features over PvP, when that is not how development works. It sucks that PvP isn’t ready, but I would rather have it worked in when it is ready, rather than taken out of the game all together.

Now if they charge for it later, that’s a whole different story. I do not remember having to pay for a patch from Blizz though.

  • Kroh

You guys are hilarious, this game will be huge no matter what Blizzard does. Why? Because it’s Blizzard. Say what you want, you WILL buy this if you are a Diablo/Blizzard fan, and if you don’t, you’ll just be missing out on another 5-Star game.

    • MrGrimord

      Hope you are trolling.

There’s so many AAA games in the market right now that this game can easily be avoidable. We’re not in 2001 anymore.

      • Ramzabehoulve

        Rofl.

What AAA games are there that are PC only?

This game will sell millions without PvP and they’ll just patch it in later for free. Big deal.

GW2? Big deal, won’t be out before September at the earliest.

        • Asdfer

Why does a game need to be PC only to be bought by someone? :S

    • Killuminati

considering Blizzard is now dominated by the money-hungry tools at Activision, you’re a fool to think such things.

      • Kroh

Stop it, my sides are starting to hurt.

While there are many AAA titles coming, I wouldn’t agree so much for the PC. Also, considering the fanbase Blizzard has been building for the past two decades, D3 will undoubtedly be a huge success. YOU are foolish to think otherwise. You’re forgetting the company here. Hell, even video game stores everywhere have begun adding a section just for Blizzard for christ sakes.

        • MrGrimord

Yeah, it will sell, but Blizzard has lost of lot of respect from the players and fanbases since a few years when they started to take stupid decisions. It will be a success yes, but will not be better than any other AAA game and won’t stand to be a GOTY with all other AAA games of this year.

        • Killuminati

How am I forgetting the company when you are clearly forgetting who runs things now? (Activision). And it’s easy to have a “Blizzard” section when it only takes up one shelf.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Brandon777 Brandon Martinez

I don’t know, is Blizzard going down the same hole that BW went down? Man those companies should have stayed independent.

  • Asdfer

From what they say it seems that PvP in Diablo 3 means arena only?
Did they completely remove the PvP of Diablo 2?
If thats true its a big letdown and there is no way in hell im buying D3, Ill go for the new torchlight instead.

    • MrGrimord

You can’t expect a good pvp experience when the servers are cap to 4 players. Recycle pvp WoW style is the way to go.

  • http://www.free-riot-points.com/ Sam

I am not too worried about the lack of PvP on release, while it is very disappointing it means a faster release day and I probably wouldn’t have touched PvP until I had at least run through normal (dying to know the story).

  • http://www.starfall247.com/ Starfall

I’m not worried if Blizzard will totally cut PVP out of Diablo3. I never really plan on doing PvP in Diablo3 anyway, so I’m not affected by this at all.
