The Secret World : 40mins of Beta gameplay

Today someone sent us a video of The Secret World beta that we wish to share with you. Its 40mins long, however, the commentator is speaking Russian. Not a bad thing, considering the footage is awesome.

Rumors have it that Cpt. BetaCake was once a mere mortal. In human years he would be 28 years old. Nowadays, he finds peace in sharing gaming news and leaks.

  • Ramzabehoulve

I hope that wasn’t supposed to convince us to pre-order or buy this because it had the complete opposite effect.

Thanks to the leaker for showing the truth everyone already suspected though.

    • Raiser

Mind explaining your definitions of ‘truth’ and ‘everyone’?

      • Ramzabehoulve

Funcom has been extremely secretive about the game and its content until the last minute as well as postponing the release suddenly. In the MMO community, this raised red flags. I’m not going to argue about the pricing model and offers, although it further destroys any credibility this game might have had at one point.

Anyone familiar with Funcom knows what is happening and this video confirms it. The game is not finished, it’s a good year away from being a barely acceptable product. I’m not going to describe what’s wrong in this video, if you can’t see it, then you might be one of the few who might enjoy it in its current state, then please do so, don’t let us veterans destroy your fun.

        • Anon

I just say that about 95% of the beta players in the beta forums really enjoy the game. There is also a thread where many players write that TSW is the best mmo they’ve ever played. It’s just a bad video from a bad player.

        • Raiser

Well the video almost made me bash my head against the wall, mostly due to terrible player behind it. Some people shouldn’t get their hands on Fraps.

Tallking about red flags – I had mine raised ever since I saw EA logo.
TBH I prefer them to be secretive than to let the marketing team promise a million things they can’t deliver. Look at The Old Failpublic. They promised to redefine MMORPG. Instead we got voice-overed WoW in space, with two-three good storylines. Hell, it didn’t have anything interesting aside from story. Combat wasn’t nearly as smooth as WoW’s, and PvP was a failure (at least for us Imps – Huttball 24/7 or camping gate at rep base at Ilum. And it was one of the most balanced servers….).
Then, look at ME3. We were promised like what, 16 diffirent endings? We got one, just in three diffirent colors.

So yeah, I have nothing against Funcom being secretive, as long as they can actually deliver on what they promise.

Also, what you seem to forget, it’s an MMO. There is no such thing as ‘finished product’ here. As long as the servers are running, the developement is never finished. Look at the beta WoW. Then look at WoW now. They’re completely diffirent games.
I’m sure it’ld be much better if they spent another year polishing it, but you see here’s the thing – in this business there is a time where developers hear ‘You either release it or start looking for new jobs’. This is sad, but true. Even more so in case of EA. There are very few companies that can just take their sweet time polishing the game into perfection. Blizzard can do this. Perhaps CCP. Can’t think of any others.

I don’t know whether or not I’ll enjoy TSW in it’s current state. But Funcom had the balls to go out of the ‘WoW-clone’ box and try something diffirent. A rare feat if you look at the state of industry. And this alone makes the game worth checking out.

Also, using phrases like ‘us veterans’ makes you look silly.

          • ROFL at some of these people

First off never did SW:TOR ever said they where redefining the MMORPG genre, they said they where taking old concepts of what had been done and improving it. Which they did in some aspects.

Also, many many many games have tried to break the “WoW clone box” and failed. People want something different so they cry it’s a “WoW clone” when it’s not different enough, then cry it’s not a “WoW clone” when it is.

        • Grand

          wow,you are a cool veteran,playing pc games.awesome.

        • Hhshsj

“in the mmo community” lol…you’re a tool.

        • Lsmith0150

Before making statements such as “Anyone familiar with Funcom knows what is happening and this video confirms it.” you should educate yourself on the team working on TSW versus the teams who worked on AO and AoC.

          • Gfdgfdggfd

Funcom will remain Failcom, no matter what team develops what game.
Even for games wich they only publish, they pretty much succeed in screwing things over; look at Bloodline Champions, a very competitive pvp based game wich had a lot of potential: Funcom had the responsability of advertising and maintaining servers, result: even if the game is on Steam, very few people had heard of it, mostly from friends+ the servers are extremly laggy, causing a lot of players to leave.

    • Rophez

I’ll be buying this cause it looked pretty fun, bugs and animations aside. Also, they are kicking the ‘let’s copy WOW’ trend. I’ll support them for that. I can see how this won’t appeal to the WOW kiddies, though.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1519681456 Beryl Ann

The videos down so I can’t watch it, but what’s so wrong with it? I’ve watched all the videos that have come from PAX and they looked amazing. Animations looked great, skills looked cool, game play looked fun. Everyone of the forums that got to play the game said they really enjoyed it and it was really smooth. So can you say exactly what was wrong?

  • Sithik

Haven’t seen the vid yet, and I don’t understand russian, so what do you mean?:p

  • Jamie

Shame that the player was extremely frustrating. Always going away from what he was meant to do.
But thanks for the video either way

  • Booga booga

Great post, thanks. Just not sure about this game. Looks intriguing, but I got stung by SWTOR which turned out to be crap. Hope this one is good.

  • Anon

After this video, his account will definitely get banned. How stupid can someone be to show his Account Name and his Character Name and that for a video which doesn’t show anything new.

  • Sithik

I liked the vid. But as Jamie said, the player seemed to not know how to play the game. He was kinda wandering off a few times. Nice video anyway:)

  • HORRIBLE

This is what happens when bad players play and make videos of games…

  • Ravanas

Yeaaaah… Think I will be giving this game a miss and go for Guild Wars 2.

  • MrGrimord

This is by way the most interesting UI I have ever seen. But yeah, animations still a major problem.
The environment looks nice and cutscene looks much more dynamic than swtor.

Hopefully we will see some improvement from pax east.

  • MrGrimord

Am I the only one who looked closely the general chat ? ^^

    • Raiser

Well 60% of the time general chat was more interesting than watching this dude play.

      • MrGrimord

Indeed, you get lot more info from there ;)

    • Rophez

I wasn’t paying attention to that, and now the video is down. Could you summarize what you saw?

      • Raiser

A bit about current beta status – like some pistol skills not being avaliable yet (only inner wheel), “how to use a vendor?” etc. Overall people seemed to like the game. Also some general talk. I think someone mentioned TOR for comparison at some point.

Can’t remember much more, only watched the vid once :P .

      • MrGrimord

Well, I remember someone asked if it was possible to drop quests and someone answers with a no, but you know, it’s beta… Humm like Raiser said, I don’t remember any trash talk about the game, except maybe how the animations (specifically, the jump animation) still needs works. Lot of comparaisons with AoC, AO.

  • Galaxor

after seeing that video its safe to say i sent funcom a email to cancel my preorder and lifetime sub the game looks intersting the graphics look crap.

    • MrGrimord

If you already paid for a lifetime sub BEFORE knowing if you would like the game or not… the problem is not the game itself.

    • Lolomglol

      You damn tool

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NTE7NRF7PM2OVYGPYOJGY4527E Aaron

TSW looks interesting. There are some quirks about it jusy by looking at it..but at least it doesn’t look like a WoW Clone. That’s something. I look forward to trying it out.

  • Killuminati

How is Failcom gonna launch a game in 2 months and still be under NDA? Def gonna be waiting for a free trial before I drop a penny on this thing.

  • kim rasmussen

actually i think that the nda is gonna go down the 11th next month with the first beta weekend!
also i honestly dont care that much about the graphics, its the gameplay im interested in, so lifetime subscription bought and paid for :D

    • Novas

6 months after release you will be kicking yourself for spending 200 bucks for a lifetime sub. I did after I made the same mistake. In a year, this game will most likely be F2P! And the majority of the “exclusive” items you will get will end up in the Item Shop! Mark my words. And yes I will try out this game.

      • MrGrimord

Haters gonna hate. I can easily find some arguement to show how casual GW2 will be but I won’t play the troll game (anymore).

And fyi, the lifetime is not sell for 200 bucks. In fact, it’s ~140 since in this package, you got the Master Pack which is at 59,99.

        • Novas

So what if you get the master pack, which btw.. is gone now!! They sold out I am assuming. It was a bunch of consumables and low level starter items and 1 extra character slot and name reservation. You already get 3 slots and 1 name reservation. Seeing how every character has access to all of the skills, and you can switch spec’s with the click of a button, I don’t see why you would need that many character slots! 3 should be plenty. So yeah, you pay 200 bucks for a lifetime sub, AND they charge you another 50 bucks for the game!! You don’t even get the game with your Grand Master Pack purchase!! That total’s to 250 bucks! Another smooth move by Funcom. Right now, if you try to purchase the Grand Master Pack (lifetime sub) you get the Master Pack, BUT you can’t see what’s in the Master Pack since they removed it from the list of items you could purchase. Real smart move there. Once again, I will repeat, I HAVE pre-ordered the game. I just didn’t get the lifetime sub, cause I know in a year the game will be F2P, or I won’t be playing it anymore. Anyone who feels that they would benefit from getting the lifetime sub, good for you. I wish you well.

          • Novas

Ok, my bad. Somehow, the Master Pack didn’t show up the first time I loaded the page. It is there now. So I was wrong. I stand corrected.

  • scottsummer

    Removed already! AHHHHHH

  • 2rasic

Wow well that was horribly disappointing… Might seem rash to cancel my preorder from a 40 min video like this, but from the current state of the game it is clear that if they launch the game when they are currently saying, it will be another AoC+AO failcom launch and I know they wont fall into that trap again.

Seems obvious now that Funcom opened pre-orders only to have enough cash to survive another launch delay. Preorder officially cancelled until this game is confirmed to be in a state that will not completely flop at launch. GW2 just got a major boost.

    • Z1pp

Dont you think it’s kind of stupid to say its horrible without even naming a reason? You are a troll .. obviously.

      • 2rasic

Did you even watch the video? If you had you would know why it does not need mentioning what is horrible about this video and game at its current state. As soon as the player passes outside the polished zones (think tortage…) the game is obviously far from complete. Funcom also claim that they are saving large parts of the game from beta-testing as of yet – how finished do you think those zones are? No way this is launching in june.

        • MrGrimord

You think Funcom didn’t learn from AoC ?? The only thing that make the game look bad is actually the actual animations because yeah, they look retarded. But beside that, I don’t see what is that bad about the game in this beta build.

        • Anon

You are just talking a lot of crap. In the current state the beta testers can test Solomon Island, Egypt and 2 of 3 Zones of Transylvania. Also nearly all dungeons are free to play for the beta testers. The PVP Mini Games are playable and crafting is also already in the beta. There are just some dungeons and the last zone in Transylvania missing, the large PVP Zone and some skills from the skill wheel and some quests, which are already in the game but locked for the players.

        • Lsmith0150

I’m glad you won’t be playing the game because we really don’t need idiots such as yourself trolling around in chat while the rest of us are having a good time.

Ignorance is quite strong in you.

          • Ramzabehoulve

That logic goes both ways, kiddo.

We are the ones thanking you for not playing our other games and devoting your trolling to this one.

  • gaofhj

    Reupload plz

  • Bangbear

I see many comments regarding graphics.
Am I the only one thinking that this is something that is not top priority?
Normally what I consider important is the whole “keep my interest long enough, for me to play it a long time”. Last game that did this to me was WoW, simply because I enjoyed PvP’ing on a high-end competitive level. The things that I find crucial for a good mmo is:

    1) Responsive gameplay (Good example: WoW, Bad example: TOR/AOC In my opinion)
    2) Captivating PvP and PvE which is not 100% farmfest (It will be at some point, but I hope you catch my drift)
    3) Balancing (Since everyone can be everything I think this MIGHT become fairly easier)
    4) Minor amount of bugs/fast bugfixing (Acknowledgement from the devs that something can and should be changed)
    5) Graphics and whatnot

The reason for me putting responsive gameplay as nr. 1 thing, is that, if you don’t feel you have 100% control over your char, you simply loose interest within days due to frustration.

I’m fine by discussing this and I might have a few things I forgot, but just don’t troll it. Do that somewhere else. Thanks

    • MrGrimord

Yeah responsive gameplay is indeed very important. Personnally, I think gfx are very good. I really don’t see any problems with them. The only thing is animations and I keep faith that they will be improved before June.

  • MrGrimord

Actually, paying for a lifetime sub now for TSW is a blind move, but well, some people can spend 200 bucks easier than other.

  • Molevulos

This game looks amazing me and my mates just bought lifetime subs and thats 10 of us :-)
Cant wait to play another fine job by funcom NOT
    sarcasm off now
no way this is gona be ready as for the nvidia link where have i heard it all before oh wait yes AOC advertised as dx11 didnt apear for over a yr after launch with 1 excuse after another.
this is a steer well clear im afraid thoguh i agree the concept is enticing.

    • Johnson23

Well, sorry mate, but Age of Conan never advertised that it would have dx11 – it was dx10. But admidetly, it still was quite poorly the way they handled it.

Without breaking too much of my NDA, I can safely say that TSW will launch with dx11, actually it runs better than dx9. And yes, that means it runs quite smoothly.

      • MrGrimord

Mind to elaborate about your impression of the game so far ?

  • Potatosalad

    “lifetime subscription”

a game which expects to do well won’t sell “lifetime subscriptions”. that is my opinion, and I hope I’m wrong.

    • http://twitter.com/Guvadan Guvadan

Can you give examples of where this theory of yours has been proven?

      • Ramzabehoulve

Hellgate : London, LOTRO, STO (Star Trek Online), etc.

Not a single game that offered lifetime subscriptions didn’t switch to F2P. LOTRO is the one that lasted the longest.

        • Guvadan

So out of the whole range of MMO’s that have came out with lifetime subs, you could only get three examples? And of those three, two are still operating and those that paid for the lifetime subs are getting VIP accounts… your argument is not very compelling.

Also, ALL games that offered lifetime subs are now F2P are they? Are you sure of that?

          • This Guy sounds like an Expert

Whole range? Which ones? List theme here please.

VIP discounts are pointless if the game is dying.

    Could someone reupload this?

    Video plz =(

    • MrGrimord

There’s lots of videos from PAX East on Youtube.

      • Shad3y

        not 40 minutes, + its different :( .

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1519681456 Beryl Ann

This video though the settings he has is extremely low and is very poorly made. PAX videos are A LOT better.

          • Dave

The PAX vids make my special place tingle.

  • Shatteredbeta

Aww, would’ve like to see this :/

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/AABVXEG2763U6LK2PUIDSCQG3E Joseph

This is why NDA exists. All this BS over a video that no one knows anything about. For all we know, this could be a video of beta 6 months ago with someone running the lowest settings on a crap rig. The gameplay videos from PAX east looked great, and they aren’t even the most recent build because talismans are still called chakras.

    • Shad3y

who changes chakras, to talismans? nerf?

      • Makaylaisabelle

This being an EA supported game not sure i will get it. SWTOR burned A LOT of people so do not expect a huge turn out on this game.
