The Secret World : 3 hours of Beta gameplay

A couple people pointed out to us via e-mail a 3 hours long gameplay recording of someone play The Secret World. We wouldn’t keep this from you ofc, so have fun watching below!

Free tip: The actual gameplay starts around the 03:00 minutes mark :)

Rumors have it that Cpt. BetaCake was once a mere mortal. In human years he would be 28 years old. Nowadays, he finds peace in sharing gaming news and leaks.

  • Mossak44

Too bad someone made it all to some kind of music, that do not play AT ALL with the game…
    Not mentioning language version…

    • Mossak44

…and I have done my best to cut out all the not-very-nice words about this video.
I really apprecieate someone recording it for other people to see, but they could make it more accessible. I would love to watch it with original music, or any good music at all, not this crap.
Yes, i know i can just mute the video, but what is the point? Music should give some more feeling about a game/video, this just makes it worse.

      • Cpnriver

I completely agree, I couldn’t watch for anymore than 20 mins and the music just got on my nerves, Thanks for the stream upload but no thanks for the music. As a regular streamer myself I like the games to have the mood set for the viewers.

  • MrGrimord

You learn much more from the General Chat than watching the guy playing.

Very good video once you closed the sound ;)

Can’t wait to try it out myself.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/3JO75BNS43WDETCNCO7F7XS6Q4 jo

    lmao. terrible.

    • rawrig

I hope you’re talking about the video and not the game, I reakon the game is looking awesome, this video is horrible though!

      • lolz

the games looks awesome? lmao, in which hole did you live in the last couple of years? Biggest shit i´ve ever seen, Funcom is going down with this crap…

        • guss

Have you even played it yet? Graphics are awesome, gameplay is new and exciting.
kicks the shit out of swtors gameplay

  • Shatteredbeta

    Thanks Betacake and the leaker!

I hate how he’s listen to such music, really breaks the immersion 8)

  • Shatteredbeta

God I laughed when I noticed him doing the Kingsmouth Code around 2:27 (investigation) and he tried one google search and failed. Then he went straight to “The Secret World quest walkthrough” but since the game is in NDA closed beta you can only find such information from the beta forums 8)

Then again looking at his gaming he ain’t the sharpest fellow :>

    • Shatteredbeta

Then he goes on to asking someone for help…
“Who is the most powerful man in every city?”
      “The priest!?”
      Hahahaha 8)

  • Novas

I have the game pre-ordered, so eventually I will play it. I have read many positive things about the game, and some negatives. The one negative that really, really, stands out, is the lack of animations. In the video, you see these hulking monsters hitting the NPC’s and the person playing, and they don’t even flinch, or look like they are taking any damage. If something that big hit you, you would go flying or maybe double over in pain, or at least show some sort of movement. Even when the NPC’s are hitting the normal sized human monsters, the monsters just stand there. Very disappointing aspect of the game. They even stated that they added more animations in the last patch!

    • Shatteredbeta

Animations don’t really matter to me. The game seems awesome, even watched the whole 3 hours of that gameplay, more excited than ever 8)

    • Zack Jensen

Most of the animations are place holders. Hopefully they will implement all of them by the time TSW launches.

  • Anon

OMG terrible music from a terrible player. And again a player who is just stupid enough to show his account name and the name of his characters. Hope he can live with the incoming ban of his whole account.

    • Shatteredbeta

Yeah he actually showed his A) Username B) Password length C) E-mail address.
All that inventory tuning is going to be wasted ^^

  • http://twitter.com/Kellur Kelir Irlik

omfg the music ….. I dont have the words to describe it…. so terrible .. my ears are hurting ..

  • BetaCake

Guys, come on now. Some common sense please.

If the leaker shows his name and details, then he clearly doesn’t care about being banned, now does he?

And yes the music over the game sounds is a bad choice, but lets just be grateful someone showed us some gameplay. Good or bad gameplay I dunno, but still its gameplay and I’m glad its out there for people to watch.

    • Shatteredbeta

Actually he’s enjoying the game a lot and clearly wanting to play more of it.
I think in this situation he’s just streaming it like any other game and doesn’t understand it’s forbidden to share information about the game nor knows the meaning of a NDA. o/
Also he has been streaming AoC before so I doubt he wanted to put that account is jeopardy as well :j

  • http://www.facebook.com/elikal.ialborcales Elikal Ialborcales

I mean, thanks for sharing this but… how can anyone be so bare of ANY curiosity? He is just aiming straight for the targets, and doesn’t try to use, examine or search anything left or right. That’s just a mentality I don’t get. Funcom spent so much time on every detail and some people just rush through as if it would be gone by tomorrow.

    • Shatteredbeta

The fun part is when he does the investigation mission and ends up asking someone to walk him through it after not finding the correct answer within 10 minutes.

  • Sneakybuffalo

I REALLY enjoyed watching this person try to engage a pack of zombies w/ a shotgun/ele focus equiped and all AR abilities

  • Massimo Virgilio

guys its all about point of views.

for example to me the music rocks while the game is nothing that I haven’t seen around. Does not show anything special whether we consider immersion and or game mechanics, for example the combat seems the typical key spamming or rotation, even AOC shows more dynamism. I will probably try the game to judge for myself but I don’t see nothing really innovative that would keep me in.

    and yeah reggae FTW

    • Zack Jensen

There are a whole lot of innovative things. The skillwheel for example which allows you to sort of make your own character class. Plus you can change it anytime. You have to collect the skills first of course, but I really love this freedom.
Another thing are the investigation and quests. I don’t think that there is any game out there that has this and last but not least the story. Most MMORPGs out there have a boring story, but in TSW the focus it definitely on it.

  • Massimo Virgilio

and stop bitching about this guys and how it plays, that’s not the point of this video and it’s the immature kind of comment

  • Zack Jensen

Oh also .. there is another vid: http://www.twitch.tv/lonewolfbrigade/b/317438928

  • KP

i got a beta invite but i couldnt not redeem it. Funcom told me there was nothing i could do about it.

  • KP

Got it working. Game is ok the setting is refreshing but between the stuttering broken cutscences i could not figure out what was going on. The animations feel very claymation like. Feels like everything else funcom. You are alone watching a bunch of people who look jus tlike you run around. Their is very little in the way of character customization atleast so far. but they have a slot for a store which means you guessed it micro transactions.

First impressions (just that first impressions this is 1 hour into the game)
Setting/Story: While the setting is fresh, story line is hard to follow.

Combat: you are limitied to 7 active and passive abilities, combat gets extremely repetative, and chunky animations do not help.

Art: Static zones, small zones, bad character models in dx 11, bad cutscenses bring the game down. Dreary dark grey/black atmosphere with lackluster music brings the experince down.

UI: Not very customizable not very useful and bland. In game browser is a nice feature

Quest Design: So far its been the typical drawn out solo quests funcom is known to start their games with.

Performance: Runs ok for a beta. Cutscenes hardly work though. stuttering during combat but i think its an animation bug.

Personally i think i will pass this one up. Ill try to play a few hours more, and write a more comprehensive review.

The reason i chose to do a 1 hour later review is i believe if you do not fall in love with a game in the first hour the starting experience needs some tweaking.

    • Mosaic

Hmmm were we playing the same game? I played for about 8 hours today I never had an animation or cutscene die, I played on high graphics and everything was really smooth. I’ve never played any fucom games o I’m not sure about that but I rather enjoyed combat I spent alot of my time playing around with different abilities which was super fun and you had super amounts of customization. I like only having 7 abilities, it was a refreshing change from the wow like game s where you have like 40ish to use at once…
I’m thinking I might rate based on the same things you rated.

Story/setting: Loved it, setting was refreshing and amazingly done I found the story/cutscenes/voice overs, the best I’ve ever seen. You thought swtor had amazing story/voiceover, this was alot better in my opinion. This was really the strongest aspect of this game. 9/10

Combat: Loved playing round with different abilities making your perfect setup, combat was fun and worked well although I do say it can get slightly repetitive at times. 7/10

Art: Background setting was amazingly nice to look at, zombies and other enemies loked extremely good, the one let down here is your character, including customisation and the like there are literally no options and the ones that exist look awful. Lack of music I believe is made up for with the realistic surrounding sounds (groaning from zombies, car sirens and the like were really well done). 6/10 (would be bought up to 8 if character models are improved which the client says it will be for launch)

UI: The other let down was very confusing with literally no customisation. 4/10

Quest Design: I rather liked the setup of quests, they were both the same and very different to usual mmo quests. There were 3 different types of quests each of which had several tiers. You had your main story quest which had about 20 tiers per planet and once you completed all 20 tiers you would get a massive amount of exp and reward. Then you had The equivalent of world arcs, you could only have 1 active at a time, these had about 5-10 tiers and gave significantly less reward then your main story per quest. Then there were what I refer to as bonus quests. You may have 3 active at a time and they have 1-3 tiers and as you’d expect have significantly less reward than the other 2 types of quest. I found the quests extremely interesting as even though you get go collect 3 of these quests you are made to think about them. For instance i got a quest to pick up some security cameras except 1 was on top of a building so i had to wander around the building to find something to jump on to get on top of the building to get the security camera. Then there were the puzzle quests which were really awesome and required lots of thinking to solve (I sat trying to find a way through some booby traps for about half an hour). O thought they had a very refreshing take on quests, made better by the brilliant voice acting/cut-scenes. 8/10

Performance: I played on max graphics and it ran perfectly fine, absolutely no problems.

Personally I’d love to play at launch this game really grabbed my attention, there are still a couple of issues (character customisation and ui mainly) but if they are sorted out, in my opinion this has potential to be the best mmo on the market.

      • http://profiles.google.com/corumo Thomas Johansen

The soundtrack isn’t in. The three or so tracks in the game are still the very first drats Mark Poole made 6 years ago. There was a pic posted on Twitter by Funcom a couple of weeks ago showing a huge orchestra recording in Abbey Road in England.

If there’s one thing you NEVER have to worry about in a Funcom game, it’s the music. AoC still has the best soundtrack ever conceived for all kinds of media.

As for animations: they are placeholders, but wen designing a game with this many abilities where characters are always able to move when casting ANYTHING, there will always be some disconnect between legs and torso. That’s a sacrifice for more fluid and a higher skill-cap combat, which I prefer.

Animations for characters in cut scenes though, those roflstomp SW:ToR in every example.

        • Mosaic

Actually there is music in it at points and it is probably the best score I’ve ever seen in a vido game, its just not all in. But at points when there is none there is always something happening like car sirens which sound great. I agree about animations in cutscenes, they were amazing. Also when on max graphics i think most of the animations look great. I was playing hammer and chaos magic and i thought the animations actually looked great, even if they are placeholders. (my personal favouate was a chaos ability where you gain magical claws and spin around in a circle whacking thing with them.

          • Autobahnkadaver

More than one time during the beta, when I was near the sheriff station, I thought “What the hell? Fire alert?” because of the siren howling. Across the street of my house is a community hall with a fire alert siren on top of it. The siren ingame was really realistic, I also liked the sounds from the ravens and everything. Just one thing I missed: The Zombies did not scream “Braaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiins!!!” when attacking me. :)

      • Ramzabehoulve

If you never played a Funcom game, then hear this warning. Wait 6 months before buying it.

        • Mosaic

See I’ve decided to take the stance that seeing as I’ve never seen a funcom game I’m gonna give it the benefit of the doubt. I mean I have only seen 2 zones and trialled a very small amount of the game but so far its way better than people say previous funcom games have been so I’m staying optimistic. And they did spend a long time developing it.

    • MrGrimord

The only things I agree with you is about how animations feels wrong and combat is repetitive. But beside that, I don’t see how you can say that the story is hard to follow, i mean, it’s by far the most interesting story I’ve ever seen in a mmo (and I tried LOTS of them). Very immersif and interesting. Graphics are very good without being extraordinary. I maxed out gfx setting and it’s above average mmo (way better than SWTOR). Quest design is very well done. Yes you got the typical kills and grocery list quests but also some fresh air such as investigation missions and sabotage mission where you actually have to think and do some research on Google and such to complete them. Combat skills limitation is a obvious thing since you have access to all skills in the game. Cutscenes are much more interesting to watch than the ones in SWTOR. I never wanted to skip any of them so far. UI is fine, I would actually rework some boxes such as the health bar but well, not a big deal. Music is top notch, very good job done there.

Will I pay to play this game ? Probably not in it’s current state. Combat and poor animations are the biggest let down for me, but overall the game feels very solid and polish. Maybe a bit too many loading screens that I didn’t understand the reason why they were needed (like the one when you enter the room to try the weapons type in the Templar Temple at the very beginning.). The ressource system for all type of weapons is wayyyy too easy for my taste (wouldn,t think we could see easier ressources system than the ones in SWTOR). Even a 5 years old child could manage this system.

This game has huge positive aspects (story, atmosphere, cutscenes, investigation quests, mature setting), but also some huge flaw (combat, animations, ressource system) from my own perspective.

    • Tadrne99

Writing a review after an hour in the game? Way to go buddy.

I don’t agree with any of that having played thru the whole beta.

Cutscenes stuttered because the servers were under a strain. A day later – no problems whatsoever. And claymation-like cutscenes? Describing every single game with cutscenes right there. The story is amazing, cutscenes short enough to keep you interested.

Combat: You are limited to 7 abilities, thank gawd no more playing the accordion in an MMO! Also you can switch your deck at any time. Mixing and matching from 588 completely different abilities is where the meat is.
I never found having 30-50 skills filling your screen with hotbars particulary fun or complex. You end up just using 3-4 of them anyway.

Art: Amazing gloomy atmosphere, great music that really adds to it. Zones are big enough (did you even go outside London?) and very free-roaming. No invisible walls, no stupid mazes to go thru. It felt like a real town, not like a map in a game.

UI: Sleek and modern. UI mods confirmed for the game (but no combat-affecting macros to ruin it).

Quest Design: Not your typical MMO starter area quests. Really refreshing to actually do some Thinking in MMO. You obviously didn’t play any of the sabotage or investigation missions, and even missed most of the action missions too.

And to all that complain about animations: Is that the only thing you’re looking for in a game? Good animations? Go watch a movie instead. Real actors have amazing animations.

This will be a great game, that will start out small but build on over time. Like EVE and other MMO’s that actually offer something new and refreshing. And not yet another McMMO endgame-levelling-rush experience with whiny kids.

      • Mosaic

This guy knows what he’s talking about (and my concerns over ui have been disbanded due to you saying mods are in, although the ui is much better than that of swtor and i prob wont end up actually using mods)

  • Metalhead9278

I dunno I am not seeing the allure here. I am completely unimpressed by the animation, I know some people dont care about that, but I do. The combat looks uninspiring, doesnt really look like a whole lot of fun.

thats the biggest thing for me, the combat looks so dull and repetitive. And dont give me its early level bull shit. Second level jedi knights and sith had awesome abilities by level 2 in swtor. Games should be fun and grab attention right off the bat, this one isnt doing it for me

    • MrGrimord

Yeah, I thought exactly this when I played. The animations just doesn’t looks nice or badass. TOR has some flaws too, but the animations are really cool to watch.

  • Makaylaisabelle

This game looks horrible. I think my time in MMo’s is over they keep getting lamer and lamer.

  • Guest

Well, once again, Funfail managed to turn great ideas into complete mediocrity. As expected, this game is far from down and will need another 6 months to one year of patches to be worth it and by then it will be F2P, mark my words.

    • Autobahnkadaver

Company-name mixed with fail = check
Spewing out a random comment without arguments to back it = check
“It’ll go free to play in a year” statement = check

Houston, we have a troll here. I repeat, we have a troll here.

  • Shatteredbeta

All in all the game was everything I expected nothing less nothing more.
I would still buy the lifetime subscription and I’m really excited for the launch.

    Graphics: Great
    Story: Great
    Cutscenes: Great
    Voice Acting: Great
    Quests: Great
    Animations: Decent
    Gameplay: Great
    Combat: Decent
    Depth: Great
    Models: Decent
    Beginner Zone: Great
    Performance: Great
    Skill Wheel: AWESOME!
    AP/SP -system: Great

Things I’m still waiting to find out are PvP, Endgame (Dungeons/Raids) and the Sabotage missions.
So far this is the MMORPG I’ve been waiting for.

    • Mosaic

Really??! Story was only great??! story was much better than great!

  • Autobahnkadaver

The combat felt a bit boring for me at first. But then it changed. While doing some quests I came upon a scrapyard with huge scrap metal golems wandering around. They were really hard and I thought “Okay, maybe I should take a look at my build.”. I switched 3 passives that buffed single active skills out, dropped a minor heal/absorption and 2 damage actives and looked what passives and actives I could use. I took one active skill that applied “hindered” (a snare/root) an another one that does more damage when the target is hindered. Also I took an active skill that buffed the damage of 2 other actives (single target and AoE) I already had, for 8 seconds. Also I got a passive that buffed this skill so it lasted 15 seconds and buffed the effects 15% up. Also I got passive which added a stacking HoT whenever I hit something and something to buff up the heal/barrier I kept for selfhealing. Oh, and I switched parts of my DPS-Gear for Healing-Gear. When it comes to gear, I can say from the gear I found near the scrapyard, it’s turning away from being easy predictable Heal-, DPS- or Tank-Gear to gear that fits your build more and the customizability takes this to an extreme. I’m really looking forward to see after launch what is really possible to do with proper built builds with fitting, customized gear.

After all this, combat was great. It wasn’t repetitive, it wasn’t something that could be called a rotation, my damage and my healing gone up by a huge chunk and I was able to kill these golems a lot easier. It took less time to kill them and because of the HoT and the increased heal I wasn’t anywhere near dying. I recommend everyone who feels the combat boring or repetitive to take a close look to your abilities and put some thought into your build. It’s worth it, even with the cheap low level skills we had in the weekend beta.

  • Madp

the oldschool jungle was great. big up.

game didnt look like much though. maybe it will play better.
